Kleine Zalze has just launched its current vintage wines after a very successful debut at the Stellenbosch Wine Festival. All three, from the Cellar Selection range, are easy-drinking but generously flavoured and offer excellent value. The Stellenbosch cellar that prides itself on a down-to-earth and unpretentious approach to all its wines, has cleverly combined accessible styling with depth and complexity in each of these new releases.

The 2007 Gamay Noir Rosé is vibrant with strawberry and salmon colours from 12 hours’ skin contact. Says winemaker Johan Joubert: “This is at least 25% longer if not more than most locally produced rosés. The varietal lends itself to extended contact which enriches the colour and gives a more pronounced taste to the wine. Strawberry, cherry and plum characters are clearly evident in this light but nevertheless flavourful wine with a clean, crisp acidity. It’s very versatile and makes a good partner to white meats, tuna, salmon and salads.”

The 2007 Chenin Blanc is made from low-yielding bush vines in the Helderberg that also received extended skin contact, as well as three months on the lees. A medium to full-bodied wine with a refreshing acidity, its prominent pineapple and peach aromas and flavours linger, ending in a clean finish. An ideal complement to shellfish, it is also a good match with white meats and many salads, Joubert believes.
The 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, also bearing the trademark richness and complexity from extended skin and lees contact, shows a combination of green pea, fig and tropical on the nose and palate. “Enjoy with seafoods, grilled veal and pasta served with creamy or pesto-based sauces,” advises Joubert.
