Montepulciano D' Abruzzo

CLASSIFICATION: Vino a Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC)
    (A Controlled Origin Name Wine C Italian acronim: DOC)

GRAPES: Montepulciano 90% - Sangiovese 10%.

SOIL: Hills slopes or high plateaux but not more than 500 m. above sea level (or 600 m. if facing south), usually sloping towards the sea.

ZONE AND REGION OF PROVENANCE: The districts of Pescara, Chieti, L¡¯Aquila and Teramo in the Abruzzo Region, south-central Italy.

PRODUCTION TECHNIQUE: The grapes ripen in mid-season or later. They are pressed, and the stalks removed, then lengthily macerated at controlled temperature. The wine cannot be sold to the public before 1 March on the year following the harvesting of the grapes.  

CHARACTERISTICS/TYPE: A well-structured, full-bodied wine. Bright ruby red with hints of violet, tending towards orange with ageing. Full-bodied and intense bouquet, reminiscent of cherry (morello). The taste is dry, full, fruity, soft and slightly tannic. Around 12-12.5¡ã.

BOTTLING: Bottled cold by micro-filtration in a sterile environment. A Bordeaux bottle is used and the special PUNTO bottle is reserved for the superior wine.

SUGGESTIONS FOR COMBINING WITH DISHES: The wine is strong, fruity, dry and full-bodied. Best with red or white meats, especially roasts and grills, and with seasoned cheeses and preserved meats of all kinds. Serve at cellar temperature (18/20¡ã C.) and uncork well before (around an hour) serving in a carafe.
